Families
The surnames shown in the
title of this website are my direct family. They are the lines of
my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, and they are this website's
root families for more than
9,000 other family members. So, there's a lot of
history here!
If you're related to me and you're not a direct member of any of these families, please search the Family Tree for your surname!
The Meadows Family:
Of
English stock, our Meadows Family most likely found it's North American origins in
Virginia. This family appears to have branched off during the eighteenth century, with one
large branch moving to what is now
West Virginia, and the other (my branch)
moving south. They first traveled to the Savannah River area of Georgia and South Carolina, but quickly moved again to Alabama where many remain today. My particular clan found themselves in Central Florida, mainly due to the horrific forces of the Great Depression.

The Hall Family:
In fact, little is known about
our Hall Family origins,
other than the fact that the place they first called home in
America was probably somewhere in
South Carolina.
This lack of certainty has even made it difficult to determine from what country our Halls first emigrated. "Hall" could be of either Scottish or German origin because this surname originated in both places! For now, I'll assume that our Halls arrived from England, so the Scottish origins seems more likely... but I'm always open to new information!
After arriving in America, what is clear is that our branch of the Hall Family stayed put! Skipping over Georgia, they settled in Jackson County, Florida... with a few over the border in Houston, County Alabama. One exception was my grandmother, who made it to Central Florida during the Great Depression.
The Whitehead Family:
I'll
admit it... I'm desperate for more information about this family!
Our Whitehead Family is firmly based in Houston, County Alabama. They probably moved to Alabama from South Carolina during the middle nineteenth century, but how they became South Carolinians in the first place is not known.
My particular branch ended up in Central Florida. Hopefully, there will be a revelation soon so that I can fill in the many, many blanks!
The Glasscock Family:
The
Glasscocks (or simply Glascock)
is probably the best known of our families. Again, a family with
English blood, the
Glasscocks are proven founding members of the
American Colonies.
Restless and provocative, the Glasscocks are known for their very robust lives!
First appearing in Warwick County, Virginia (modern-day Newport News), this family's second home, which was constructed in the 17th century, still stands as a testament of quality of their lives.
With ties to George Washington and William Faulkner, this is a very interesting line! From Virginia, to Tennessee, to Alabama, and finally on to Florida, the Glasscocks are also well-traveled!

The Harper Family:
Again,
an English surname appears as another root in our family tree, but beyond that
little is known about our particular Harper line... but not for lack of trying!
There are many people throughout the United States today searching for the origin of this particular branch of our family tree. All that is known is that the head of the family was killed during the American Civil War. (Or maybe not! We're really not sure!)
What is for certain is that throughout the recorded history of our Harpers, they have all resided in Houston, County Alabama. The "minor" detail is that we just don't know how they got there.
The Granger Family:
The
Grangers are such an important family, they named their hometown after
themselves:
Grangeberg, Alabama.
A family that is fairly well documented prior to the American Revolutionary War, their American origins are found in Horry County, South Carolina (pronounced "or-ee," the "H" is silent) where the family is name is rather common. Little is known prior to that, but we're working on it!
The Bullock Family:
Some
elements of our family congregated in a single state... while others inhabited an area
the size of a county... but the entire contents of our Bullock Family fit snugly into one small town:
Gordon,
Alabama.
Despite the fact that nearly all of our Bullock Family's links are located in Gordon, the 1833 birth of the oldest member was in Georgia. However, knowing the Bullocks, even though this member was born in Georgia, his birthplace was probably not far from Gordon because Georgia is only a stone's through from Gordon... right across the Chattahoochee River!
The Richter Family:
Of
Prussian (German) origins, the Richters are a family
- just like the Grangers - with their own town!
Rectortown, Virginia is a town in the foothills
of the Appalachians founded by the Rector family, which is
an Anglicized version of the
German surname "Richter." (Richter is actually
pronounced "rEEs-tah.")
Yes, this is probably the only branch of my family that is not from Great Britain. Even though this is a well-known family, unfortunately major gaps remain unexplained. Such as why they emigrated from Western Germany, but their name is of Prussian descent (Eastern Germany, now mostly Poland, Lithuania, and the Kaliningrad area of Russia).
But note this: the Richters were obviously a major force in Northern Virginia because they dominated the town of Rectortown, but guess who else shared the power... the Glasscocks!
